
DeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13 years old. At 13 she began performing on the stage. She graduated with an Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. During her summer stock performance she was encouraged by the director to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She was employed as a secretary during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her portrayal of Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered following her casting in the second pilot episode of the show. Janet was also featured in an episode of the show The Ropers in 1979. DeWitt made her acting debut in an episode in 1984 of Three's Company. In June 1991 she resumed acting by taking on a role in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! A character that was based on her voice, which was voiced by another actress, appeared in a 1997 episode on Pinky and the Brain. She made an appearance on the episode Cybill as well as an appearance on the last episode of Living Single. Her 2000s TV works included Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as well as Call of the Wild.
